VT: Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)

From USDA: Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)

We deliver conservation solutions so agricultural producers can protect natural resources and feed a growing world.

Type of Support

Overview

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) from the NRCS is designed to help farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners integrate conservation practices into their operations. It provides technical and financial support to address natural resource concerns, which include improving water and air quality, conserving water resources, enhancing soil health, reducing erosion and sedimentation, and improving or creating wildlife habitats. EQIP also aims to mitigate the impacts of drought and weather volatility. The program emphasizes one-on-one planning to develop tailored conservation plans that lead to environmental benefits without compromising agricultural productivity. Specific initiatives under EQIP include support for organic farming, with a focus on conservation plans that align with organic certification standards and transitioning to organic practices. Financial caps are in place for organic initiative participants. The program also supports community-scale agriculture through the High Tunnel Initiative, promoting extended growing seasons and localized food production with environmental benefits. Additionally, EQIP offers Conservation Innovation Grants to encourage the development and adoption of innovative conservation techniques.
