    Overview

This program offers affordable funding options for the development of essential community facilities in rural areas. An essential community facility is one that provides a crucial service to the local community for its orderly development, in areas that are primarily rural and not aimed at private, commercial, or business endeavors. Eligible areas are rural regions including cities, villages, townships, towns, and Federally Recognized Tribal Lands with no more than 20,000 residents. The funds can be used for a variety of purposes including the purchase, construction, and improvement of facilities such as healthcare, public facilities, community support services, public safety services, educational services, utility services, and local food systems. Grant approval and assistance levels vary based on the population size and median household income of the community, with a maximum of 75% funding available for the smallest and least affluent communities.
