The mission of the American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR) is to initiate, encourage, and support research and public understanding of the history and cultures of the Near East and wider Mediterranean world, from the earliest times. ASOR aims to achieve its mission in a manner that is apolitical and without any religious affiliation.
ASOR's grant program focuses on supporting archaeological projects and individuals involved in excavations in the Eastern Mediterranean. It offers funds through scholarships for fieldwork participants, grants for archaeological projects, research fellowships for members, and scholarships for annual meetings. Specifically, the Lawrence T. Geraty Community Archaeology Grant aims to promote local community involvement in the preservation and presentation of archaeological sites in Jordan. These grants support projects that engage with local residents for the protection of cultural heritage, including training in archaeological preservation, income generation through local crafts, and development of community-based programs.
