The grant program "A Cultural Approach to Good Health and Wellness in Indian Country" (GHWIC) focuses on integrating community-chosen cultural practices that are family-centered to enhance resilience and connections to community, family, culture, and wellness. It also aims for policy, systems, and environmental changes to build clinical-community linkages for chronic disease prevention and management (including commercial tobacco use, diabetes and pre-diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and oral disease), and promote wellness and disease prevention through culturally appropriate methods. The grant has three competitive components: 1) implementing evidence-informed activities to improve health and prevent chronic diseases, 2) allocating funds for subawards to support the implementation of these strategies and provide technical assistance and resources, and 3) establishing a Tribal Coordinating Center to develop a national communication plan, support the implementation of a national evaluation plan, and facilitate a Community of Practice for shared learning and peer support.
