Through funding and resources, it aims to foster the commissioning and performance of new works by American composers, highlighting the diversity and innovation within the contemporary classical music scene.

Overview

The Classical Commissioning Program by Chamber Music America grants funding to U.S.-based presenters and ensembles for the commissioning and performance of new works by American composers. This grant program focuses on works scored for 2–10 musicians performing one per part, composed in any of the musical styles associated with contemporary classical music. It especially encourages the commissioning of emerging and mid-career composers, aiming to support the creation and dissemination of new classical compositions.

  • Based in the U.S. or its territories
  • CMA Organization-level members
  • No overdue reports or financial obligations to CMA
  • Must have waited one full grant cycle after completing any previous CMA commissioning project before re-applying
  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents (for the leader/primary member of the ensemble and composers)
  • Non-profit status not required for ensembles
  • Composition must be: for 2–10 musicians, scored for one musician per part, a new concert-music piece, submitted in both print and digital formats by specific dates, premiered, and performed publicly in the U.S. or its territories by specified dates, performed exclusively by the commissioned ensemble through June 30, 2022

Authors of works in progress
Authors of arrangements of previously written works
Composers of compositions that are soloistic in nature (such as concertos)
Composers of music for dramatic works (staged or unstaged)
Composers of chamber opera
Composers of incidental music for other media
Individuals applying for fees for non-musician participants in the proposed work
Projects that cannot stand as a stand-alone work for concert performance in collaborative projects involving other artistic disciplines.
