The Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) works to support the economic and workforce needs by offering small business consulting services, access to capital through grants, and affordable, flexible loan products, aiming at fostering economic growth and employment opportunities within the community.
The Healthy Retail SF program, established by legislation introduced by Supervisor Eric Mar in 2013, strives to redefine healthy retail in San Francisco. It focuses on creating a comprehensive model that includes defining what constitutes healthy retail, establishing an expert advisory group, developing program structures and tools, and conducting outreach to store owners across neighborhoods. Participating stores receive a customized development plan focusing on business operations, physical store enhancements, and community engagement and marketing. Integral to the program's model are Community Food Advocates, known as Food Guardians and Food Justice Leaders, who play a vital role in its implementation. The program’s broad goals include addressing health equity, reducing unhealthy influences while increasing access to healthy options, and employing research-backed approaches for promoting healthy retail environments.
