The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation aims to enhance the quality of life in the Duluth Superior region through the establishment and administration of endowed funds created by individuals, families, private foundations, and businesses. Since 1983, it has distributed over $40 million in grants and scholarships, managing more than 360 funds for various charitable purposes.
The grant program focuses on a wide array of causes, with goals to support peace and justice through various means such as lectures, news articles, sister city relationships, foreign exchanges, and awards for university study related to these themes. It also supports innovative solutions to problems like hunger and homelessness, providing emergency aid in specific regions. Prospective grant recipients include colleges, universities, Finnish-American organizations, the Immigration History Research Center, organizations supporting Native American treaty rights, health care for low-income individuals, and international organizations working on local-impact programs like national security and the environment.
