The East-West Center is dedicated to enhancing understanding and relations among the people and nations of the United States, Asia, and the Pacific through cooperative study, research, and dialogue.
The U.S. South Pacific Scholarship Program (USSP) is a competitive, merit-based scholarship initiative designed to provide opportunities for individuals from the Pacific island countries to pursue Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees at the University of Hawai‘i. The fields of study supported by this program are directly relevant to the development needs of the participating countries and include a wide range of disciplines such as agriculture, business, communication/journalism, education, environmental studies, gender studies, NGO management, political science, public administration, public health, STEM fields, among others. The scholarship aims to enhance the understanding of the United States among the recipients, incorporate a mentoring component, offer a potential follow-on summer internship, and foster engagement through host family and volunteer service programs. It targets candidates from Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu who meet specific selection criteria. The program is administered by the East-West Center on behalf of its funder and places priority on fields of study that support its overarching goals, while excluding support for professional degrees such as architecture, law, and medicine.
