The mission of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is to support and foster research in the biotechnology and biological sciences fields. This includes facilitating the growth and development of new investigators in these areas, ensuring the UK remains a leading force in scientific research. By funding research across its scientific remit, BBSRC aims to advance understanding, technology, and applications that can benefit society and the economy.
The new investigator scheme aims to support newly employed university lecturers, research council institute researchers, and fellows in securing their first major element of research funding. It specifically targets those at a level equivalent to a lecturer and covers the full spectrum of BBSRC's scientific remit. Eligible applicants must be based at a UK research organization acknowledged by BBSRC. Projects can request full economic costs of up to £2 million for up to five years, with BBSRC funding 80% of these costs. A significant emphasis is placed on equality, diversity, and inclusion, encouraging applications from a diverse range of researchers and supporting flexible working arrangements to accommodate personal circumstances. This includes support for career breaks, people with caring responsibilities, and those seeking alternative working patterns.
