EKCT was founded to formalize Ernest and his family's dedication to charitable activities, with a focus on conservation of wildlife and the natural environment, encouragement of youth enterprise and outdoor activity. These ideals, along with supporting their home county of Sussex, remain core to their mission.
EKCT aims to 'make a difference' by supporting UK-registered charities within its areas of interest, which include wildlife and environmental conservation both in the UK and internationally. The grant program considers applications for start-up costs, core costs, or specific projects, including building/refurbishment, specialist equipment purchase, or other capital expenditures, as well as assistance with running costs. Grants are divided into three categories based on amount: Small Grants (£5,000 and under), Medium Grants (£5,001 – £10,000), and Large Grants (£10,001 and over), each with specific application timelines and processes.
