The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation focuses on providing young people with opportunities to create change within their communities through the CommuniCare program. This initiative is designed to help young adults learn about community needs and develop leadership skills by engaging in grantmaking. The aim is to promote rewarding and educational community service, fostering active citizenship among future generations.
The CommuniCare grant program operates as a year-long, student-directed initiative where groups act as "mini-foundations." Students select a community issue or service area they are passionate about and work to raise $1,500, which is then matched by the foundation 10:1 up to $15,000. This process includes raising funds, researching Oregon nonprofits that align with their chosen mission, evaluating grant proposals, and ultimately deciding which organizations to fund. Additionally, up to 25% of the matching funds from the foundation can be allocated towards supporting projects and programs within their school or district.
