The Mind & Life Institute is dedicated to alleviating global crises of disconnection such as loneliness, isolation, and racism by understanding the role of the human mind in both creating and solving these issues. The Institute focuses on the transformation of minds toward interconnection and positive action in the world, leading initiatives that support individual well-being, societal flourishing, and a human-earth connection through research on contemplative practices and their impact on the mind.
The Varela Grants are designed to honor the legacy of the neuroscientist and philosopher Francisco J. Varela by supporting contemplative scientists and scholars. These grants encourage rigorous examinations of contemplative techniques, aiming to enhance our understanding of the mind, life, contemplative practices, and their potential in reducing human suffering. The grants embody Francisco's vision by promoting research that integrates first-person (and/or second-person) methods with third-person scientific approaches, such as neurophenomenology. This includes developing and employing novel methods like microphenomenological interviews to study contemplative practices and experiential states deeply. The Varela Awards are a cornerstone of Mind & Life’s strategy to build an interdisciplinary field of contemplative sciences, urging high standards of scientific rigor and innovation in exploring the human mind and behavior.
