The Music Library Association is dedicated to serving as the professional association for music libraries and librarianship in the United States. Since its founding in 1931, it boasts an international membership of librarians, musicians, scholars, educators, and members of the book and music trades. It focuses on national and international activities while also working at the local level through eleven regional chapters.
The Walter Gerboth Award, established by the Music Library Association in memory of Walter Gerboth, supports promising work by newer members and researchers in music, music bibliography, and librarianship. It aims to encourage scholarship in these fields and to honor Walter Gerboth’s legacy as a mentor and pathmaker in music librarianship. Each year, an award of up to $1,900 is given to support research by individuals in institutions that may not offer release time or subsidy for such endeavors.
