The U.S. National Science Foundation is an independent federal agency that supports science and engineering in all 50 states and U.S. territories. NSF was established in 1950 by Congress to promote the progress of science, advance the national health, prosperity and welfare, and secure the national defense.
The REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program at BIOS funded by the National Science Foundation is designed to support and engage U.S. undergraduate students in hands-on research projects in the field of marine science. This internship opportunity is aimed at students interested in pursuing graduate studies or careers in scientific research. The program supports nine undergraduate researchers each fall semester to work on individual research projects in a team setting under the guidance of experienced BIOS faculty and staff. The research projects are divided into three main themes: Coral Reef Function and Resilience, Planktonic Life including Size, Abundance, and Community Structure, and Marine Microbial Oceanography. Participants will not only gain valuable research experience but also have the chance to present their findings, engage in field excursions, and attend specialized workshops and seminars.
