UNDEF's mission focuses on supporting initiatives that amplify the voice of civil society, champion human rights, and encourage inclusive participation in democratic processes. Through funding, UNDEF aims to complement the United Nations' efforts in bolstering democratic governance globally by primarily directing resources towards local civil society organizations.
The grant program by UNDEF is designed to empower civil society organizations by funding projects that are two years in duration. These projects aim to promote human rights, strengthen democratic governance, and facilitate the participation of all societal groups in democratic processes. UNDEF grants support projects across eight thematic areas: Community Activism, Electoral Processes, Gender Equality, Media and Freedom of Information, Rule of Law and Human Rights, Strengthening Civil Society Interaction with Government, Tools for Knowledge, and Youth Engagement. The selection process for these grants is highly competitive, with less than two percent of proposals receiving funding, highlighting the program's commitment to identifying and supporting the most impactful initiatives.
