The mission of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is to support organizations led by low-income individuals aiming to break the cycle of poverty and improve their communities. Funded by annual contributions from Catholics across the United States, CCHD is dedicated to projects that uphold Catholic values, with a specific focus on enhancing community influence for the common good in partnership with local Catholic dioceses.
The Economic Development Grant Program by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development offers grants ranging from $25,000 to $75,000. It supports economic development initiatives that significantly involve the poor and marginalized in the creation of new businesses offering good jobs or in the development of assets owned and enjoyed by local communities. The program specifically funds five types of Economic Development Institutions (EDIs) which include community-owned real estate initiatives, business incubators and marketplaces, community development financial institutions, social purpose and training businesses, and worker-owned co-ops and community-owned businesses. To be eligible for funding, EDIs are expected to have governance models that promote leadership and ownership by people living in poverty. The grant program is designed with a three-year eligibility limit for support to any EDI. The program's goals are twofold: empowering low-income people through the operation of economic development institutions and developing economic structures for equitable access to income and a balanced distribution of assets between individuals and the community.
