CTF: Rooted in Justice Grants

The Cedar Tree Foundation's mission focuses on amplifying youth voices and actions within the environmental and food justice movements. It is committed to supporting community-based organizations that manage youth-led urban greening programs, aiming to foster a deep, personal connection between young people and their environment. This includes ensuring access to nature, countering agricultural oppression and food apartheid, and addressing injustices based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, and disability.

    Type of Support

    Overview

"Rooted in Justice" is a grant program designed by the Cedar Tree Foundation to support organizations, groups, collectives, and programs led by youths aged 12 to 20, which are focused on urban greening and social justice work within communities historically or currently faced with various forms of injustice, including a lack of access to nature, agricultural neglect, food apartheid, and oppression based on identity. The grant emphasizes the development of social justice-based programming that redistributes power and resources, amplifies marginalized voices, tackles root issues of oppression, and involves young people in significant planning and decision-making roles. It defines urban greening broadly to include any project that benefits urban dwellers and their environment or local wildlife. The grant also looks to fund organizations that engage youth through cohort-based programming rather than one-off events or programs. Financial support from the grant is intended for both project execution and general operating expenses, with a requirement that a portion of the funds be managed by youth participants for activities they find beneficial. The grant awards are over two years, with amounts ranging from $20,000 to $25,000 per year, and successful grantees may be eligible for a third year of funding. Additional specific support is provided for professional development of organizational staff to enhance youth programming and justice practices.
