Since 1962, the George W. Neilson Foundation has dedicated itself to funding community projects and programs in the Bemidji region. Its mission is to support organizations that enhance the quality of life across various sectors such as arts, education, environment, health, and economic development, thus fostering the development of the community.
The George W. Neilson Foundation is focused on improving community development by awarding grants to projects and programs aimed at enhancing the lives of children, adults, and seniors in the area. The Foundation seeks projects that contribute to the quality of community life, community cohesion, revitalization, a positive community image, and respond to specific needs. It emphasizes the importance of matching funds, "sweat equity," and other support to ensure project ownership and viability. The Foundation considers grants for both physical infrastructure projects ("bricks and mortar") and new programming initiatives, requiring evidence of sustained support post-start-up. Eligible costs include capital building and equipment expenses, facility expansions or improvements, educational exhibits and materials, start-up costs on a one-time basis with secured ongoing funding, and applied research addressing community issues.
