The Pop Culture Collaborative is a philanthropic resource and learning community aiming to transform the narrative landscape in America regarding people of color, immigrants, refugees, Muslims, and Indigenous peoples, especially focusing on women, queer, transgender, and/or disabled individuals. It aims to achieve this through partnerships with the social justice sector and industries like entertainment, advertising, and media to help audiences understand the past, present, and future of American society. The goal is to promote a pluralist culture where people engage in the hard work of belonging together in a just society.
The Pop Culture Collaborative's grant program supports initiatives that can drive transformative experiences for mass audiences through pop culture stories, media, and social networks. It is particularly interested in content development, audience engagement strategies, and the creation of immersive narrative environments aimed at cultural, narrative, and behavioral change. The grant program revolves around five key areas: supporting artists in advancing culture change, building the field of pop culture for social change, promoting culture change research, backing movement-led pop culture narrative strategies, and fostering innovations in mass audience activation. Priority is given to projects and initiatives that marry pop culture with social change efforts, demonstrate leadership in narrative and culture change, prioritize authentic and equitable leadership from directly affected communities, and have a clear long-term strategy for narrative change. Opportunity grants, awarded up to $50,000, support emergent projects, time-sensitive gatherings, or critical experiments at the intersection of pop culture and social justice.
