The Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC) is a scholarly organization dedicated to the study of music cognition. Its mission is to advance understanding in the rapidly growing field of music perception and cognition, offering a platform for researchers, hosting conferences, and providing student opportunities to explore the fascinating aspects of human interaction with music.
The SMPC's research grant program aims to support innovative and collaborative research projects led by trainees, particularly those from underrepresented demographics within the SMPC community. This initiative focuses on funding studies that explore understudied topics in the field of music perception and cognition, especially research that challenges existing views by considering non-Western art music cultures. Preference is given to projects helmed by trainees, with the goals of expanding research into underserved areas and improving opportunities for underrepresented trainees. The program offers financial support for research activities, mentorship, professional development resources, conference participation, opportunities to present research findings, and potential publication in Auditory Perception & Cognition. Additionally, recipients receive a one-year membership to the Auditory Perception & Cognition Society and may request mentorship from the SMPC Mentorship Committee/Network. The maximum budget for a project is $5,000 USD.
