The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium is dedicated to generating and providing science-based information to enhance the social and economic well-being of coastal residents. It aims for the optimal use and conservation of marine and coastal natural resources. It operates as part of a national network, focusing on research and outreach in South Carolina and regionally, in partnership with member institutions.
The Consortium's Biennial Research Program seeks to fund research addressing key areas such as coastal conservation, resilience, sustainable development, fisheries and aquaculture, and education and workforce development. These projects, which can span one to two years, are aimed at improving understanding and management of coastal and marine environments. The program typically disburses about $500,000 annually, with individual projects often receiving $30,000 to $80,000 per year. Only faculty from Consortium member institutions are eligible to apply, though collaboration with co-PIs from other institutions is encouraged.
