Harbor Freight Donation Request: Who Still Qualifies for Gift Cards in 2026–27

Harbor Freight now limits gift cards to high school trades classes, veteran groups and first responders. Inside: the current form, the documents to attach, and odds from TheShareWay.

Harbor Freight Tools donates only Harbor Freight gift cards, requested through an online form, and under its current rules only three groups qualify: public high school skilled-trades teachers asking for their own class, veteran organizations with 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(19) status, and local police, fire and EMS departments asking for their own department. PTAs, PTOs, booster clubs, school clubs, robotics teams, sports organizations, foundations and healthcare organizations are excluded. Each organization gets one request per fiscal year (August 1 to July 31), and your tax documents must be attached when you submit. About 1 in 4 Harbor Freight donation requests tracked on TheShareWay in the past 12 months succeeded. You can apply on Harbor Freight's current request form or track your request on Harbor Freight's TheShareWay page.

One warning before you start: Harbor Freight's own Donation Request Information page still says PTA and booster raffles qualify, and the large "Request A Donation" button at the bottom of that page leads to a form that is no longer active. Everything below follows the live request form.

Figures as of October 2026, from Harbor Freight applications tracked on TheShareWay over the past 12 months. Donation value covers all Harbor Freight donations reported on TheShareWay.

TheShareWay has tracked 2,347 Harbor Freight donation requests since early 2023, which puts it among the 25 most-requested companies in the directory. Of the past year's declines where a nonprofit recorded a specific reason, most came down to eligibility, with notes like "not a CTE program," "does not support sporting events" and "doesn't support our type of organization." Making sure you fit one of the three categories below is the biggest thing you can do for your odds.

Who qualifies for a Harbor Freight donation

Harbor Freight's current gift card request form, live since late July 2026, supports three areas. In each one, the request has to come from the group that will use the gift card. Harbor Freight says it does not donate to outside organizations or third parties asking on a group's behalf.

    Skilled trades education

    • High school skilled-trades classes that teach the expert use of tools and materials to build, repair and maintain products and structures: agricultural mechanics, carpentry, construction, electrical, HVAC, advanced manufacturing, plumbing, transportation mechanics and repair, and welding.
    • The request must come from a public-school teacher for their own school or classroom, and the gift card goes directly to that school or teacher.

This is the only route for schools. General classroom requests, school clubs, robotics teams, PTO/PTA and booster organizations, and school beautification projects are all excluded.

    Veteran organizations

    • The organization must hold 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(19) status.
    • Eligible uses are raffles and fundraisers, veterans memorials, and veterans' gardens, museums and cemeteries.
    • A representative of the veterans organization submits the request, and the gift card goes directly to that organization.

Veteran groups are the only category where a raffle or fundraiser prize is still a listed use.

    First responders

    • Local public safety agencies such as police, fire and EMS departments.
    • Eligible uses are tools and safety equipment, and improvement projects such as repairs to police, fire and EMS facilities.
    • A member of the department submits the request for their own department.

The current form doesn't list raffles or fundraisers for first responders, so frame your request around equipment or a facility project. Because the request has to come from the department itself, auxiliaries and department foundations are unlikely to qualify, and foundations are on Harbor Freight's excluded list.

Who Harbor Freight won't donate to

Every recipient must be a U.S.-based organization with current 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(19) tax-exempt status, or the equivalent, held for at least one year. The organization must operate locally (or as a local chapter of a larger group), and its work must benefit the area served by the Harbor Freight location it requests from. Harbor Freight does not donate to:

    • Social and fraternal organizations
    • Individuals
    • Foundations or scholarship funds
    • Sports organizations, including youth, amateur and professional teams or events
    • Political, legislative or lobbying organizations
    • Post-secondary schools and private or religious-based schools
    • Healthcare organizations
    • Religiously affiliated institutions, groups or events
    • PTO/PTA or booster organizations
    • School clubs and robotics
    • School beautification projects
    • General classroom requests

Harbor Freight also gives no cash donations, event sponsorships or support for individuals. Every donation is a Harbor Freight store gift card.

Why Harbor Freight's own pages disagree

If you've read that PTAs and boosters qualify, you probably saw Harbor Freight's Donation Request Information page. It still lists school raffles and fundraisers "including PTO/PTA and Boosters," a calendar-year limit, and a 30-day window to send documents after you apply, and its eligibility text hasn't changed since at least early 2025. The request form linked from the site's menu is newer and stricter. When the two disagree, follow the form. Some third-party guides still repeat the old rules, so treat any page that tells a PTA or booster club to apply with caution.

How to submit a Harbor Freight donation request

    1. Confirm you fit one of the three categories above, and that your organization hasn't already submitted a request or received a donation since August 1. Harbor Freight allows one request and one donation per organization per fiscal year, which runs August 1 to July 31.
    2. Gather your documents before you open the form. You need your Tax ID or, for a public school, its NCES ID, plus your IRS determination letter or another tax-exempt status letter. These must be attached when you submit, and Harbor Freight declines requests that arrive without them. If you're not sure which IRS letter you need, see what a 501(c)(3) determination letter is.
    3. Open the current form directly at app.smartsheet.com/b/form/019f6735d0657003892bfac05dbed884, or use "Request a Donation" in the menu at harborfreightgivingback.com. Skip the button at the bottom of the Donation Request Information page, which points to an inactive form.
    4. Make the purpose match your category: the trades class and project for teachers; the raffle, fundraiser, memorial or museum for veteran groups; the tools, safety equipment or facility repair for first responders.
    5. Log the request on Harbor Freight's TheShareWay page so you have the date you applied and a reminder to follow up.

By submitting, you also agree that Harbor Freight may contact you for photos to share on its website and social media.

What you get, and how fast

Harbor Freight donations tracked on TheShareWay are typically $25–$100 gift cards, with a median of $50. Nonprofits who reviewed their Harbor Freight donation on TheShareWay mostly describe receiving an emailed digital gift certificate they could spend in store or offer as a prize.

Harbor Freight responds to donation requests in a median of 6 days, based on applications tracked on TheShareWay over the past 12 months. Harbor Freight doesn't publish a lead time, so if your project or fundraiser has a date, apply several weeks ahead to leave room for a slower answer.

Once the gift card arrives, a thank-you letter to Harbor Freight is an easy way to stay on good terms before next fiscal year's request.

Harbor Freight Tools for Schools and the Prize for Teaching Excellence

Harbor Freight Tools for Schools is a separate program of The Smidt Foundation, established by Harbor Freight founder Eric Smidt. It is not a place to send donation requests: its grantmaking does not accept unsolicited funding proposals. For skilled-trades teachers, the open door is the annual Prize for Teaching Excellence.

    • What it awards: $2 million in cash prizes to 25 public high school skilled-trades teachers and their programs. Five grand prize winners receive $100,000 ($30,000 to the teacher and $70,000 to the program), and 20 more winners receive $75,000 ($25,000 to the teacher and $50,000 to the program).
    • Who can apply: teachers employed as skilled-trades teachers at a U.S. public high school. There is no nomination process, so teachers apply directly.
    • When: the 2026 cycle took applications from March 3 to May 1, 2026, and winners were announced on September 29, 2026. Watch hftforschoolsprize.org for the next cycle's dates.

The prize is a competitive award, not a donation, so a trades teacher can pursue both: the gift card form for classroom tools now, and the prize when applications reopen. TheShareWay also has a profile of The Smidt Foundation, the foundation behind the program.

If the new rules rule you out

Harbor Freight's narrower focus leaves out many of the groups that used to ask, PTAs and boosters especially. Some better fits on TheShareWay:

How TheShareWay helps with your Harbor Freight request

Harbor Freight's page on TheShareWay keeps the current application link, eligibility notes and outcome data in one place, and lets you track your Harbor Freight request next to every other ask for your project or event. Because Harbor Freight allows one request per fiscal year, a record of when you applied and what you received makes next year's request easier.

    Frequently asked questions

    • Does Harbor Freight still donate gift cards?

Yes. Harbor Freight Tools donates Harbor Freight store gift cards through an online request form, but only to three groups: public high school skilled-trades teachers requesting for their own class, veteran organizations with 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(19) status, and local police, fire and EMS departments requesting for their own department. It does not give cash, event sponsorships or support for individuals. Harbor Freight donations tracked on TheShareWay are typically $25–$100 gift cards, with a median of $50, and about 1 in 4 requests tracked in the past 12 months succeeded.

    • Does Harbor Freight donate to PTAs, PTOs or booster clubs?

No. Harbor Freight's current gift card request form, live since late July 2026, excludes PTO/PTA and booster organizations, school clubs, robotics teams, school beautification projects and general classroom requests. Harbor Freight's Donation Request Information page still lists PTA and booster raffles as eligible, but that page's eligibility text hasn't changed since at least early 2025, and the request form is the newer, stricter rule. PTAs and boosters will do better with companies that list schools as a focus, such as those in TheShareWay's list of companies that donate to schools and PTA/PTOs.

    • Does Harbor Freight donate to schools?

Only to public high school skilled-trades classes, and only when a teacher requests for their own school or classroom. Eligible fields are agricultural mechanics, carpentry, construction, electrical, HVAC, advanced manufacturing, plumbing, transportation mechanics and repair, and welding. The teacher attaches the school's Tax ID or NCES ID and a tax-exempt status letter to the form, and the gift card goes directly to the school or teacher. Skilled-trades teachers can also apply for the separate Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence, which awarded $2 million to 25 teachers and their programs in 2026.

    • How do veterans organizations request a Harbor Freight donation?

A representative of a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(19) veterans organization submits Harbor Freight's online gift card request form with the organization's Tax ID and IRS determination or tax-exempt status letter attached. Eligible uses are raffles and fundraisers, veterans memorials, and veterans' gardens, museums and cemeteries. Each organization can submit one request per Harbor Freight fiscal year, which runs August 1 to July 31, and Harbor Freight responds in a median of 6 days, based on applications tracked on TheShareWay over the past 12 months.

    • How often can I request a donation from Harbor Freight?

Once per fiscal year. Harbor Freight allows each organization one donation request, and one donation, between August 1 and July 31. Its Donation Request Information page still describes a calendar-year limit, but the current request form uses the August-to-July fiscal year.
