The mission of the Australian Lepidoptera Research Endowment, established within the Perpetual Foundation by Drs Marianne Horak and Douglas Hilton, is to support taxonomic and phylogenetic research on Australian moths and butterflies. This support extends to both professional and amateur entomologists and aims to enhance the curation of the Lepidoptera collection at the Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC).
Overview
The Australian Lepidoptera Research Endowment grant program is designed to fund a variety of projects within the realm of Lepidoptera research in Australia. Its broad goals include the support of taxonomic and phylogenetic studies on Australian moths and butterflies. Specific areas of interest for the grant program include:
- Support for visitors or students working on curating parts of the ANIC Lepidoptera collection.
- Funding for collecting trips aiming to gather material for specific taxonomic studies.
- Support for molecular, morphological, and life-history research to aid in taxonomic and phylogenetic studies.
- Provision of cabinets for amateur collectors to ensure proper storage of collected material or material on loan from institutions.
- Assistance with the preparation and printing of scientific publications.
- Funding for international researchers needing travel and accommodation support to work in the ANIC on taxonomic research and/or curatorial work that enhances the scientific value of the collection.
- Scholarships for undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students undertaking taxonomic and phylogenetic research on Australian moths and butterflies.
